According to The American Heart Association, heart disease is the second leading cause of death in the state. Michigan has the 10th highest death rate from cardiovascular disease in the country. 20% of the population smokes, and 66% of Michigan residents are overweight or obese.

Michigan benefits from a low incidence of Salmonella, a low percentage of population without insurance, and higher number of primary care physicians, but struggles with a high prevalence of smoking, low immunization coverage among children, and a high rate of cardiovascular deaths. In the past two years, disparity in health status by education decreased 11% from 29.7% to 26.3%.
