Cardiovascular Health in Texas

According to The American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the state. Texas has the 18th highest death rate from cardiovascular disease in the country. 15% of the population smokes, and 68% of Texas residents are overweight or obese.

Texas benefits from a low rate of drug deaths, a high percentage of high school graduation, and a low prevalence of frequent mental distress, but struggles with a high percentage of population without insurance, a lower number of primary care physicians, and high prevalence of diabetes. In the past year, smoking increased 5% from 14.5% to 15.2% of adults.
