According to The American Heart Association, heart disease is the second leading cause of death in the state. Idaho has the 19th lowest death rate from cardiovascular disease in the country. 13% of the population smokes, and 65% of Idahoans are overweight or obese.

Idaho benefits from a low prevalence of smoking, a low violent crime rate, and a low prevalence of low birthweight, but struggles with a low percentage of high school graduation, a high incidence of pertussis, and a lower number of primary care physicians according to America's Health Rankings. In the past year, disparity in health status by education decreased 5% from 28.7% to 27.4%.
