According to The American Heart Association, heart disease is the second leading cause of death in the state. Montana has the 18th lowest death rate from cardiovascular disease in the country. 18% of the population smokes, and 61% of Montana residents are overweight or obese.

Montana benefits from a low prevalence of obesity, low levels of air pollution, and a low prevalence of diabetes, but struggles with a high prevalence of excessive drinking, a high percentage of population without insurance, and a lower number of primary care physicians. In the past five years, infant mortality decreased 15% from 6.6 to 5.6 deaths per 1,000 live births.
