Cardiovascular Health in Pennsylvania

According to The American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the state. Pennsylvania has the 17th lowest death rate from cardiovascular disease in the country. 18% of the population smokes, and 66% of Pennsylvania residents are overweight or obese.

Pennsylvania benefits from a low incidence of Salmonella, high immunization coverage among adolescents, and a higher number of primary care physicians, but struggles with a high rate of drug deaths, high levels of air pollution, and low per capita public health funding. In the past five years, drug deaths increased 36% from 14.6 to 19.8 deaths per 100,000 population.
